In the opening round of Group D at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup on July 22, China suffered a 0-1 defeat to Denmark.

Among the starting lineup against Denmark is Li Mengwen, making her the first player from Taizhou, a city in East China's Zhejiang province, to grace the World Cup stage.

Hailing from Guanlu town, Xianju county, Li Mengwen showcased her exceptional skills as both a full-back and midfielder for the Chinese women's soccer team.

The 28-year-old Li has consistently performed well in various competitions in recent years. In 2018, she secured the silver medal at the Jakarta Asian Games. Then, in 2021, she was selected to represent China in the women's soccer team at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Later that same year, she captured the gold medal in the women's soccer senior group at the 14th National Games, held in Xi'an, Shaanxi province.

Last year, Li played a vital role as China, thanks largely to her presence, secured their ninth Asian Cup title after a 16-year wait.

On Sept 2, French club Paris Saint-Germain announced the loan signing of Li Mengwen, who joined the PSG women's football team and concluded her loan period in June.

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, commenced on July 20 and will run until Aug 20.
