More than 400 weiqi, or Go, players from across Zhejiang province gathered in Tiantai county, Taizhou, as the Weiqi Tournament of the fifth Zhejiang Provincial Sports Congress started on July 9.
Held over six days, the event had multiple formats, including team matches, three-player and two-player collaborative games, and open competitions across eight different categories.
According to organizers, this is the largest amateur weiqi tournament in Zhejiang and is held once every four years. Compared with previous years, the number of participants has grown significantly.
"The turnout reflects the growing popularity of weiqi in Zhejiang and the spirit of making sports a part of your daily life," said Sun Mingjie, secretary-general of the Tiantai Weiqi Association.
Tiantai's unique cultural and natural setting enhances the atmosphere of the event. Known as the birthplace of Buddhism and Taoist traditions, the county has a rich heritage and scenic landscape.
Tiantai is also recognized as China's first "Hometown of Weiqi", having produced 11 professional players — the most among all counties nationwide.
"Playing weiqi in such a tranquil place brings clarity to the mind," said Lin Shengjian, a top amateur weiqi player. Former national amateur champion Cao Ruxu also praised the younger generation's strength.
