A group of 25 international students pursuing a Master's degree in Chinese Studies at Zhejiang University recently visited rural villages in Xianju county, Taizhou, Zhejiang province. These students represented more than 10 countries, including Italy, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.
During their visit, they conducted extensive research on practical approaches to rural vitalization in China through on-site visits, cultural immersions, and discussions.
In Xiaye village, Cultural Commissioner Zhang Pingping explained the process of converting idle farmhouses into unique homestays, leveraging ecological advantages for economic benefits. Yang Chunlin, Party Secretary of Yang'an village, introduced the Xianju Ancient Chinese Waxberry Composite System — one of the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) certified by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization.
The students explored traditional Chinese craftsmanship at the Xianju Lantern Aesthetics Museum in Baita town and the calligraphy and painting institute in Tianshi town. They also examined the fusion of traditional culture and modern technology at the Digital Chinese Music Experience Hall in Shanxia village.
Following their field research, the students participated in discussions with local rural operators, art curators, and entrepreneurs, examining rural landscapes from both Chinese and international perspectives.
This research trip demonstrated Xianju's integration of natural ecology, intangible heritage, and industrial innovation in rural vitalization. Professor Li Xuping from Zhejiang University's School of Literature said, "We hope to show the world, through an international perspective, the symbiotic relationship between 'green waters and lush mountains' and 'cultural confidence' in the rural vitalization of China."
