A homestay selection competition concluded in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, on July 12, with 52 homestay owners presenting their unique features and creative offerings. In recent years, Taizhou has promoted the development of a diverse homestay industry, attracting tourists from all over the country with its distinctive accommodations.

Pan Hailong, a descendant of fishermen, left his high-paying job to return to his hometown of Wenling's Shitang town and establish a boutique homestay. By offering high-quality lodging, he has created a seaside retreat where guests can enjoy a leisurely vacation.

The Aegean Sea Homestay in Shitang has been transformed from an abandoned stone house into a tranquil seaside resort, providing a natural escape for visitors.

Huang Manfang, the hostess, emphasizes the importance of both room layout and the overall guest experience. With a romantic theme, the homestay offers additional services such as lawn weddings to attract a broader clientele. Embracing the emerging "pet economy", the homestay features pet-friendly facilities and services as well.

Upon departure, guests can take home a variety of local foods. The Aegean Sea Homestay offers a variety of seafood snacks, showcasing Wenling's unique cuisine.

"The soul of a homestay lies in the warmth of its services. As hosts, we must go beyond merely providing accommodation," says Huang.

In the competitive homestay industry, unique themes have become crucial in attracting visitors.

Luo Yuqi, the owner of Wuwen Xidong Homestay, has meticulously arranged public areas, including dining, coffee, and reading spaces. Cultural activities such as book clubs and tea parties are also held, offering some spiritual nourishment. "Since 2018, we have organized over 100 reading events," Luo shared.

Luo notes the strong interest guests have in intangible cultural heritage and century-old shops. She has pioneered the creation of several cultural heritage products and offers diverse study activities.

Zhang Zhaomeng, vice-president and secretary-general of the Zhejiang Provincial Tourism Homestay Industry Association, advised homestay owners to refine and deepen their offerings to create unique value and further enrich the homestay experience.
