Wenling, a county-level city in Taizhou, recently celebrated a remarkable feat in the fruit growing industry.
Chen Wenxuan, a peach farmer from Xinhe town, made headlines with his marvelous accomplishment of harvesting a honey peach weighing a whopping 774 grams, making it the largest peach ever recorded in Zhejiang province.
This year, Chen dedicated a 60-mu (4 hectares) plot of land to peach cultivation, nurturing six different varieties of the fruit. Among the bountiful harvest, two peaches stood out as exceptionally large, both belonging to the Cold Dew variety of honey peaches, renowned for their vibrant color and perfectly round shape.
The birth of this "Peach King" is the culmination of years of unwavering dedication and hard work by Chen. "For over a decade, we have been devoted to the cultivation of this specific variety, and as our understanding of its unique characteristics deepened, we began to focus on the 'one branch, one fruit' cultivation method," Chen elaborated. "Each tree is meticulously pruned to bear a maximum of only 120 to 130 fruits, with each peach typically weighing around 300 to 350 g. To have produced a peach weighing 774 g is truly a historic milestone."
Wenling has been making waves in the agricultural scene in recent years, thanks to its dedication to improving cultivation practices and hosting various competitions. Alongside the monumental 774-g peach, Wenling has also celebrated other noteworthy achievements, including a colossal 28.21-kilogram watermelon and a towering sugarcane measuring 5.02 meters in height.
