Taizhou in East China's Zhejiang province has reported impressive growth in its cargo throughput in May.
According to Taizhou Customs, the city handled 2.7 million metric tons of cargo in May, marking a 44.1 percent increase from the previous year and setting a new record for a single month since the inception of seaborne transportation in Taizhou.
This feat can be largely attributed to the efforts made by local authorities to upgrade ports, improve logistics services, and expand shipping networks.
Toumengang Port, for instance, recorded a weekly cargo throughput of 374,000 tons in May, while completing the loading and unloading of 44 second-haul ships within 60 hours, both of which broke records.
Similarly, Damaiyu Port has seen a significant increase in efficiency following its smart upgrading.
Rapid investments in water transport have also contributed to the impressive growth, with Taizhou investing 517 million yuan ($72.69 million) in the first three months of this year, marking a 143 percent year-on-year increase and accounting for 33.7 percent of the annual target set by the local government for 2023.
The city's success sets a strong precedent for the future growth and development of the region's logistics and seaborne transportation industry.
