Yongquan town in Taizhou, East China's Zhejiang province recently made the 2022 list of Chinese towns with a characteristic sector that has an annual output value of 1 billion yuan ($145.06 million) or more.

The list was released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Growing tangerines in Yongquan can be traced back to the Warring States Period (475-221 BC). The fruit was once used as a tribute to the court during the Sui and Tang dynasties (222-907) .

Tangerine planting is now a pillar industry in the town, which is presently home to six Zhejiang famous brands, one provincial agricultural leading enterprise and four municipal leading companies related to the fruit.

Tangerines produced in the town have been exported to countries like Russia and Canada.

In 2021, Meixian village, which is administered by Yongquan, was listed among villages with a characteristic sector that has a minimum output value of 100 million yuan per year by the ministry.
