A Taizhou-made video was recently conferred the special award of the inaugural "Picturesque and Dynamic Zhejiang" Global Short Video Contest.

The award also comes with a cash prize of 1 million yuan ($145,348).

The 2-minute video tells the story of a young Taiwan man who helps his grandpa alleviate his homesickness by capturing the scenery of his grandpa's ancestral home – Yuhuan, a county-level city in Taizhou.

The video was inspired by stories in Yuhuan, where a number of residents were forced to move to Taiwan in 1951 after the Kuomintang troops retreated from the city.

Dachen Island, situated to the southeast of Taizhou Bay, was liberated by the People's Liberation Army in 1955. More than 18,000 residents from the island and its surrounding islets moved to Taiwan along with the Kuomintang. There are currently over 100,000 Taiwan residents who are of Dachen origin living there.

In addition, Taizhou's Damaiyu port has opened the only direct sea passenger and cargo route that links the Yangtze River Delta with Taiwan.

An increasing number of Taiwan residents have in recent years returned to Taizhou to seek out their roots, visit relatives, travel and explore business opportunities.
