A national legislator has called for more efforts to facilitate the reform of educational support provided by the nation's developed areas to Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

Shang Haihong, a deputy to the National People's Congress, made the remarks to the nation's top legislature, whose annual session commenced in Beijing on March 5.

Since 2010, Taizhou has been partnering Aral, a city in Xinjiang, under the central government's east-west program for poverty relief.

Shang, a teacher at Luqiao Experimental Primary School in Taizhou's Luqiao district, used to provide educational support in Xinjiang.

Based on her teaching experience in the region, Shang listed a number of challenges, including different textbooks and heavy workloads, that could reduce the effectiveness of the national east-west cooperation program.

To tackle these problems, she came up with a number of measures including strengthening cultivation of local teachers, establishing a national alliance to channel more educational resources to Xinjiang, and further promoting the popularization of the Chinese language in the region.
