E-commerce gains steam in Taizhou

Wenling, Tiantai and Linhai in Taizhou, East China's Zhejiang province have been ranked among the top counties (county-level cities) in terms of e-commerce competitiveness in 2022, according to a report recently released by Economic Daily.

Taizhou currently has 34,000 active online retail stores, the fourth highest in Zhejiang. The thriving e-commerce industry has created 374,000 jobs in the city.

Taizhou has also excelled in leveraging e-commerce to boost common prosperity in its rural areas. The local government has built 20 workshops to help farmers sell agricultural products through commercial livestreams.

To date, nearly 100 livestreaming sessions have been staged in in the workshops, and this has resulted in more than 10 million yuan ($1.42 million) in sales.

The workshops comprise facilities including an e-commerce service center and livestreaming rooms, according to a head official from the Taizhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce.

The city aims to build 490 such workshops by 2024 to enable more rural residents to enjoy the dividends of the digital era, he said.
