A blood clam workshop established by Taotou village in Sanmen county, Taizhou, has greatly bolstered local common prosperity.

The facility, which occupies an area of over 600 square meters and comprises a processing line, a live-streaming base and an exhibition hall, was built by authorities to help local farmers expand sales of seafood.

Blood clams, also known as blood cockles, so called because of the red hemoglobin liquid inside their soft tissues.

Blood calms produced in Taizhou's Samen county are nationally renowned and a national agricultural GI product. The clams produced in the county are tender, fatty and slightly salty, as the location where they are harvested is where saltwater and freshwater meet.

With the help of the workshop, the output value of the small seafood industry in Taotou village, revolving around blood clams, amounted to 250 million yuan ($35.56 million) in 2021.

The thriving industry generated a collective income of 14 million yuan for the village and lifted the per capita annual income of local residents to more than 100,000 yuan.

In May, the approach adopted by Taotou village to reform the income distribution system was listed among the best ways to carry out the "common prosperity" campaign launched by Zhejiang.

Located on an island, Taotou village has a population of about 2,000 people, of which 185 are She people, one of the largest proportions of ethnic minorities in Taizhou.
