Yuhuan, a county-level city in Taizhou, recently made the list of the first batch of "waste-free" cities in East China's Zhejiang province, becoming the only place from Taizhou to win such an honor.
A "waste-free" city is an advanced urban management concept aimed at minimizing the production of solid waste, as well as improving the recycling and safe disposal of waste in the city.
Yuhuan has in recent years made strides in treating waste.
In June, a system designed to treat ship pollutants was put into operation in the city, enabling pollutants including oily sewage, domestic sewage and waste mineral oil to be processed into harmless substances.
To date, the system has been applied at numerous ports in Yuhuan including Kanmen, Damaiyu, Lingmen, Zhantai and Jishan, leading to the collection of over 158 metric tons of pollutants.
Yuhuan is currently home to 71 "waste-free" city cells, which refer to places such as factories, industrial parks, villages, schools, homestays, and mines that minimize the impact of solid waste on the environment in a city at municipal level and above.
One of these places is the Yuhuan branch of Shaanxi Futianbao Environmental Protection Technology Co Ltd. The facility is expected to purify one million cubic meters of waste water while extracting 8,000 tons of salt and 160 tons of valuable metals annually.
