Taizhou in East China's Zhejiang province kicked off a campaign to improve the fitness of locals on June 15, according to local media reports.

The campaign, which started with a 2.5-kilometer fun walk, will last a month.

The local government also issued 9 million yuan ($1.38 million) worth of coupons at the launch ceremony to boost sports consumption. The coupons can be used to purchase sports equipment and services.

That same day, more than 10,000 people participated in a slew of other fitness events held across the city.

Taizhou has in recent years been making exercise facilities and venues more accessible to local residents. The ultimate goal is to have a gym located within a 10-minute walk from every person residing in its urban areas.

Specifically, the city aims to build five sports parks, six football fields, eight village-level fitness squares, 21 multifunctional sports fields, 56 government-funded gyms, as well as 100 kilometers of fitness tracks this year.
