Taizhou was given an "excellent" rating in a national assessment for household garbage sorting in the third quarter of 2021.

Taizhou was ranked ninth in the evaluation of 297 cities at prefecture-level and above in China. The evaluation was conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

The city has seen notable results in the promotion of garbage classification.

It has been removing old trash bins and instructing people to dispose of their garbage at centralized stations. Centralized stations have made it possible to carry out a centralized management system, thus improving the accuracy of household waste classification and the recycling rate.

As of December last year, Taizhou had built 1,610 such centralized stations and implemented the practice in 812 residential communities.

It had also constructed five standardized sorting centers and set up 460 resource recovery stations in the past year.

Presently, the recycling rate of recyclables in Taizhou stands at 58.67 percent.

Its waste treatment capability has been improved significantly as well.

Waste incineration plants located in its three counties of Xianjiu, Tiantai and Sanmen have been put into operation. These plants have a combined annual capacity of 1,100 metric tons of garbage.

A facility to handle hazardous waste has also been put into use in Wenling, a county-level city in Taizhou.
