Taizhou's population exceeds 6.62m

The population of Taizhou in East China's Zhejiang province increased by an average of 1.05 percent annually during the past 10 years to more than 6.62 million, according to the seventh national census recently released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

Each household from the city has an average 2.48 people, 0.16 less than that in 2010. The ratio of males to females stands at 108.28 percent, a rise of 1.55 percent over the 2010 figure.

Jiaojiang district is the most populous area in the city, with a permanent population of roughly 826,000, followed by Huangyan district, Luqiao district, Linhai, Wenling, Yuhuan, Tiantai county, Xianju county, and Sanmen county, according to the census data.

In terms of demographics distribution, people aged 14 or younger make up 14.69 percent of the city's total population, 0.77 percentage points less than 2010, while the share of those aged 60 or above rose 5.41 percentage points from a decade ago to 19.57 percent, indicating an aging society.

Compared with the sixth national census in 2010, the number of people with a college degree out of 100,000 people has surged from 5,954 to 11,565. The city's illiteracy rate has also dropped from 8.04 percent to 4.41 percent.

People living in Taizhou's urban areas account for 61.98 percent of the city's total population, up 6.44 percent from 2010.
