Daimaiyu port in Taizhou handled more than 350,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2020, a new record high.

The container throughput at the port amounted to 362,000 TEUs as of Dec 31, a yearly rise of 13.8 percent.

In November alone, the figure stood at 57,000 TEUs, up 57.35 percent year-on-year, the fastest growth rate in a single month for the port.

The cargo throughput at the port started to rebound in the third quarter after a contraction in the first half of last year due to COVID-19, according to Peng Wen, manager of the operation department of Damaiyu Port Services Co Ltd.

With an advantageous location and unique natural conditions, Daimaiyu port is the only county-level port in Zhejiang province and an important seaport connecting Taizhou with the world.

The port has seen robust growth since its establishment in 1999.

In 2009, a sea route linking Daimaiyu with Taiwan's Keelung was opened. To this day, this is still the only direct sea passenger route from the Yangtze River Delta to Taiwan.

In 2016, Daimaiyu port obtained the international port code "CNDMY" and became a settlement port of international container trade.

In 2018, Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co Ltd acquired Zhejiang Daimaiyu Port Co Ltd, resulting in exponential growth for Daimaiyu port.

To date, the port has opened container routes to cities including Dandong, Yingkou, Tangshan, Qingdao, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Fuzhou, Shantou and Guangzhou.
