Yuhuan, a county-level city in Taizhou, is leading the way in garbage sorting and recycling as local authorities have implemented a slew of measures to promote the practice.

The implementation of garbage classification has been included in the appraisal system for officials at town and sub-district levels.

More than 200 cases of infringements have been recorded to date, with fines topping 20,000 yuan ($3,076.92).

As of December, the waste classification system has been implemented in 91.66 percent of Yuhuan's jurisdictions, with resource utilization rate hitting 92 percent.

Through a built-in app called "Yidairen" on Alipay, a mobile wallet platform run by Alibaba Group, local residents can now conveniently sell recyclable trash including paper, plastics, metals and home appliances.

In addition, more than 140 garbage trucks in the city have received digital upgrades which would ensure that trash is collected and transported in a proper manner.

Yuhuan has also taken steps to enhance its garbage treatment capacity.

The second phase of the garbage incineration plant in the city has been put into trial operation, improving the city's daily garbage disposal capacity of household garbage to 1,150 metric tons.

Its kitchen waste treatment plant has also entered trial operation with a designed disposal scale of 100 tons per day.

Meanwhile, more than a thousand people from the city have attended the trash classification training sessions organized by the local government. These training sessions qualify them to supervise and guide local residents in the garbage sorting.
