Taizhou in East China's Zhejiang province has seen remarkable accomplishments as part of the country's drive to build a moderately well-off society in all respects, according to a provincial government news conference Dec 1.

Dachen Island in the city's Jiaojiang district exemplifies the city's accomplishments in the national drive.

Formerly a backward island, Dachen now has emerged as a hit tourism destination. Last year, the island's per capita disposable income reached 49,394 yuan ($7,516), 9.6 times that in 2006 and higher than the provincial average.

Taizhou's GDP rose from 1.013 billion to 513.4 billion yuan from 1978 to 2019, with average annual growth of 12.8 percent, 1 percentage point higher than the provincial average.

The city's per capita GDP had jumped to 83,555 yuan, exceeding the World Bank's standard for medium and high-income economies.

The city's fiscal revenue rose from 119 million yuan to 72.98 billion yuan from 1978 to 2019.

The per capita disposable income of the city's urban residents in 2019 was more than 190 times that in 1978, while the ratio for its rural counterparts exceeded 250 times.

Its per capita dwelling size stood at 54.7 square meters. The number of motor vehicles owned by the city reached 1.8975 million units in 2019, which means every 3.2 people from Taizhou own a motor vehicle.

The average life expectancy of local residents has also surged to 80.58 years.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Taizhou's GDP increased by 1.7 percent year-on-year in the first three quarters of this year.

The revenue of enterprises in the core sectors of the digital economy above designated size expanded by 11.8 percent over that period.

So far this year, five companies from the city made IPOs, bringing the total number of listed companies in the city to 60.
