Taizhou plans to hire 10,000 certified garbage classification supervisors by the end of the year as the city looks to promote garbage sorting across the city.

The city will soon set up more certification sites for garbage classification supervisors.

All residents in good health can sign up for the certification tests arranged by district and county governments across the city.

The move comes after local authorities announced in August last year that the city will follow Shanghai's example in implementing mandatory household garbage sorting.

Last year, the city hired 350 qualified supervisors, who contributed a great deal to the city's garbage-sorting campaign.

They are responsible for directing residents to sort their garbage at designated spots and promoting awareness of the policy.

The supervisors will award residents points which can later be exchanged for daily necessities, as long as they sort their garbage correctly.

Taizhou recently designated the Spring Equinox and Autumn Equinox as days to promote garbage classification.

Last year, it introduced a garbage sorting education program, the first of its kind in the nation, to raise recycling awareness among the public.

As of November 2019, garbage sorting had been promoted in 85.16 percent of urban areas in Taizhou and 73.42 percent of counties administered by the city.
