After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, activities at the festival were enriched. In 1989, the festival was instituted as Aged People's Day. On that day the elderly are organized in every place to climb mountains in the autumn, in a bid to broaden their horizons, share feelings and exercise. Thanks to these activities, people have a chance to return to nature and the beauty of great mountains and rivers.
